THE SWAMP OF BATANG KAYAN BASIN

Date : August 28, 2005

Batang Kayan is the largest river in the most western part of Sarawak. Below are the photos taken by me while exploring & collecting fish in the swamps near the middle & lower part of Batang Kayan.

This is a freshwater swamp located near the middle part of Batang Kayan. It is the habitat of Betta lehi.

Betta lehi. It is a pugnax group of wild fighting fish.

The next destination is a peat swamp forest north of Batang Kayan. (lower part)

Even there is not much water in the swamp of this forest (almost dried up), we're shocked to find a juvenile of swamp eel. (Monopterus albus)

Plant sucking bug.

A species of Aroid.

A species of fan palm. (Family name : Arecaceae; Genus name : Licuala sp.)

Last destination is a swamp in the lower part (south) of Batang Kayan.

Betta cf anabantoides ?? or Betta cf waseri ?? Another species of wild fighting fish found in this swamp since last year.

It looks more like Betta waseri than Betta anabantoides !!!

Guess what is this ?

It is a spider !!!

Wild ground orchid, Bromheadia finlaysoniana.
